launched By Chin Saik
Yoon in Penang, Malaysia, May 2005. The much awaited
new generation of WiMAX (Wireless Interoperability for Microwave Access) chip
has been launched by Intel and Fujitsu. The new chips will allow manufacturers
of wireless broadband to produce affordable WiMAX enabled products.
WiMAX offers a maximum operational range of about 50 km and is seen as an alternative
way of delivering broadband Internet connections to users. It is the trade name
for the IEEE 802.16 technical standard adopted by the industry. Fujitsu
Microelectronics America, Inc. (FMA) introduced its integrated WiMAX system-on-chip,
the MB87M3400, on 21 April 2005. Equipment manufacturers will use the chip to
produce high-speed wireless modems operating on frequency bands below 11GHz. The
chip sells at US$45 each. see
