2005 Updates New initiatives
launched to build China's IPv6 Internet By
Huixin Ke, Beijing, China, February 2005. The Shanghai
Newly-Generated Computer Network for Education and Scientific Research started
operations on 16 January 2005 and became the first regional component of China's
Internet infrastructure running on Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6). This new
network has a speed of 2,500 Mbps and has been designed to support scientific
research, distance education, high-speed computation, telemedicine and online
libraries of universities connected to it. Prior to this, the world's
largest IPv6 Internet resided in China's Internet demonstration project, CERNET2,
which was officially launched on 27 December 2004 in Beijing. CERNET2 is the second
generation of the China Education and Research Network, which offers IP access
service at speeds of 1Gbps - 10Gbps to universities and R&D institutions throughout
China. It was also in December 2004, that an IPv6 central router (an
important piece of equipment for the next-generation Internet) passed technical
appraisal at the PLA University for Information Science and Technology. This is
the first high-performance IPv6 router to be built in the country using Chinese
intellectual property. IPv6 Internet has been provided with a national
focus in China following the release of a document on "Notice for Organising
China's Internet Demonstration Project in 2005 To Support Its R&D, Industrialisation
and Applied Trials" on 13 January 2005 by China's National Development Reform
Commission (NDRC). More information is available at: |
